THE STAGES IN MANUFACTURING AN
INLAID CHIP
(this plaque was made about 1990 by Atlantic Molding,
Maine, a chip manufacturer)
Note: Although it can't be seen in the picture below, the final chip has
either a clear transparent coat or a uniform textured (a very fine checkering
or linen finish) pattern over the entire face of the chip, so the inlay is
"sealed into the chip." That prevents counterfeiting, and it makes the
chip look particularly attractive. In the 4th stage, below,
the inlay was placed on the soft chip, and then all the following was done
at once in stage 5: heated compression that sealed in the inlay, made the
rim mold impression (elephant and crown design) and gave the linen finish,
cross-hatching surface to the chip.
