file down 1.  Improving spinning quality of Put and Takes. Merely sanding or filing down a very pointy tip of a top can tremendously improve the spinning ability of a top -- it can make all the difference between failure and success.   Marianne Jager provided these tips and pictures: "Beneath I show you what I have done with the point of a French spinning top.  I restored the point for proper spinning. ... As you can see the point was flat and not equal. ...[I use] waterproof sandpaper alone, different kinds. Work till the shape was better and than polished with very fine sandpaper. ....  A matter of rubbing against the sandpaper; leave the point out of the rubbing. During this proces constantly turning and turning to get it all over around the same.
It is a challange!"
before and after Before and After. See row above.
2.  Tip: you can decrease the spinning time of the top if you spin it on a paper or linen napkin, not a hard flat surface.

Harry Fay's - "Put And Take" song, --
"Put and Take," (1922; 2 min, 59 seconds; composer, Silberman; Conductor, G W Byng) delightful Music Hall-type ditty -- lyrics and instrumentals -- sung by Harry Fay.  You can hear it on YouTube:

"One day I went walking into Woolworth's store,
bought a little top I'd never seen before,
a little copper Put & Take there isn't any doubt,
it comes into me system and I cannot get it out.
I took it home and showed the wife and proud as a prince, and we never had any regrets.

Put & Take, Put & Take, Put & Take,
What a funny little game is Put & Take.
First you loose, then you win; that’s the time when you GRIN,
then you have another little spin.

There she goes, there she goes., there she goes.
Yes, that's the game that keeps you wide awake.
There's Uncle Joe, Auntie Lou, all the monkeys in the zoo,
They all play Put & Take.

Soon the football match I went on Sampson's Day,
20,000 people there to see them play.
I walked into the middle of the field and shouted "Stop!,
the Blazes with your football, let me spin me little top,"
then 20,000 people swarming round me that came,
then we started the new-fangled game.

Put & Take, Put & Take, Put & Take,
What a funny little game is Put & Take.
First you loose, then you win; that’s the time when you GRIN,
then you have another little spin.

There she goes, there she goes, there she goes.
Yes, that's the game that keeps you wide awake.
A family upon-me-soul, based on Fanny up-the-pole, they all play put and take.

We kept up a party at the house one night,
all the kids were laughing there with such delight,
then little Tommy Green was there, his mouth oh dear, oh lore,
the size of it reminds you of the ever open door.
I spun the top and Tommy had his mouth open wide,
and it went down his throat clear all sides.

Put & Take, Put & Take, Put & Take,
What a funny little game is Put & Take.
First you loose, then you win; that’s the time when you GRIN,
then you have another little spin.

"There she goes, there she goes., there she goes.,
Yes, that's the game that keeps you wide awake.
Oh what a game, never fails,
all the convicts in the jails,
They all play Put & Take."
